Brexit clearly has had a major impact on the UK economy, but if you look at GDP growth for the UK, it has outpaced the likes of France and Germany in recent years.
It's really hard to say that it's had a definitive effect.
I think what it's really done for the UK economy has been COVID, and that has led to the incredible rise in
in welfare spending.
But the problems that we mentioned at the beginning about low productivity and higher borrowing and a lack of a plan to get these things under control existed well before COVID and indeed well before Brexit.
If you look back to immediate aftermath of the financial crisis when British debt increased vastly to pay for bank bailouts and we had austerity to go with it.
But the welfare bill, the pensions bill has continued to rise since then.
And combined with that low productivity, it means that the fundamental impact
landscape of the British government finances is one that bond investors do not find particularly appealing and that is why not only are we borrowing more at the moment but also having to pay a high yield than many countries of a similar size with higher debt to GDP ratios like France and like Germany.
