And when you start the novel, you are presuming exactly as you said, this is a very traditional third person omniscient novel about a tragic accident.
But then you get to the end of the prologue in which Mira says, I know because I was the girl who hit the golf ball.
It's a thorough memoir.
the amateur is presented as Mira Winston, now a novelist in her early 60s, recounting the one moment, and we all have them in our lives, the one moment that was the before and after moment in her life.
Prior to that swing at that golf club that afternoon,
She assumed she was going to go to Yale in a few weeks, and then she was going to go to the LPGA because she is a spectacular golfer.
She crushes all of the grown men at her country club.
But instead, she's killed a kid.
She's killed a classmate.
And even if it is a terrible accident, that is a horrific thing to live with.
And suddenly, instead of going to college, she's going to punk rock clubs in 1978, doing way too many drugs.
And as the flap copy says,
trying to find comfort in all the wrong places, including the married golf buddy her father plays golf with.
There's nothing that drives me crazier in a novel than when I see an information dump.
When either we need to have four paragraphs to explain in action or 15 pages to explain why the killer was hiding in the garage drives me bonkers.
The thing about the dining room table is that it immediately conveys the reality that this is old money.
