My next book, The Jackal's Mistress, was done.

So I don't think it crossed anyone's mind at Doubleday when they didn't really hear from me about anything of consequence for 90 days.

They weren't at all worried.

I didn't even tell my lovely bride what I was writing.

And obviously, she knew I was in this room every day.

And she's read every single one of the 3.8 million words I've published before they were published.

So at the end of 90 days, when I was finished, it was a Monday, the last Monday in August of 2024.

I tucked the manuscript into an email, addressed the email to my wife.

our daughter, Jenny Jackson, my agents, and the subject line was simply, how I spent my summer vacation.

I pressed send on that Monday morning at 9 a.m.

and before the end of day Tuesday, every single person on that email had read it and were more than a little gobsmacked.

It was the closest thing I think Jenny had ever seen to a finished novel coming over the transom.

I'm a pantser.

I've never written an outline.

I respect authors who use outlines, but the pleasure for me is having my characters take me by the hand and lead me through the dark of the story.

This was different.

The way Jenny and I usually work together,

is this.

I will send her 90 pages, 100 pages.

I will send my wife 90 pages, 100 pages.
