There's two semiconductor related stocks that are called Samsung, which a lot of listeners would know, but also SK Hynix is the other one.
They now account for about half of their total share market.
And these stocks are up close to 10x in the last few years.
So there's been a big change in the, I guess, bullishness around memory chips over the last couple of years and the demand for them in AI.
And those have been two of the biggest beneficiaries in the whole world.
And the market's just going crazy for them.
well it's a problem and i guess people have had the same concerns about the magnificent seven in the us as they've become a bigger and bigger proportion of the market and definitely those large caps in the us now are pretty big compared to the last 20 or 30 years i mean if you actually go back further though there were periods in history like the 1960s and 70s when those large caps accounted for even more obviously korea is a pretty extreme example having two stocks now account for half of the market but
I mean, the big problem for active managers over there is if you're underweight, those two stocks, you're going to be massively underperforming.
And like you say, that's one of the reasons why ETFs are appealing is because you always have an allocation to those stocks that are driving the market higher or lower.
I think it's been one of the drivers of ETF inflows over there.
And Mirai, the company that is an investor in our business and that we're over there at this conference for, they have the biggest semiconductor ETF in Korea.
And to give you an idea of the scale, just in the last seven or eight months, that ETF has grown from $1 billion US in assets under management to over $10 billion in assets under management.
Since last September.
Just phenomenal growth.
And they pulled up a chart of this ETF.
And this ETF is largely those two stocks and a few other global semiconductor stocks.
And it's, I mean, the ETF has done phenomenally, but the amount of inflows of retail money.
And the interesting anecdote I heard was a year ago, like 90% of the retail trading in Korea was in cryptocurrencies.
But now it's like 95% is in Korean stocks.
So all of those mom and dad investors and traders out there have switched from being crypto experts into being, you know, Korean semiconductor guru.
