When I got there in the summer of 97, what surprised me the most, honestly, was the length, the speed, and the intelligence of the game.
How smart guys were.
The length and speed, obviously, when you are – I think it's really hard for bigs because when you're the tallest guy every single game, you might get a random game where you get a 6'8 guy.
You might get a random game where there's a 6'10 guy.
But every single day in practice, every game you go against, everyone's bigger, stronger, faster than you.
It's just the truth, right?
And they're older usually.
You can let a guy beat you off the dribble and you can catch him with a step and block him off the backboard or something like that.
Or at least deflect a shot or contest a shot.
You can get away with a lot.
You can make a tough move and just throw it up there and go get it and put it back in, right?
I hate to say take plays off, but there's times where it's like you can jog back.
You can't do that in college, man.
You can't.
And I couldn't do that in practice from day one.
We were playing open gym or practices.
It was just the speed, the athleticism, the length.
Being able to get your shot off was so much harder because they close out so much faster because they're length and they're athletic.
I thought the community, if I can tell every high school guy to go watch a college practice and to lock in on one thing is how loud the gym is, right?
And yeah, the coaches will talk and they're coaching, but it is so loud in a college gym.
