had an attack on America like this and for him to get out there and everybody knew he had the he had the bulletproof vest on right which constricts you from throwing I tell the story in the book about how Bush is warming up under Yankee Stadium before the game and Derek Jeter captain of the Yankees comes by and he's like how you feeling you know talking to the president and um and Jeter says as he's walking away you're gonna throw it off the mound right
And Bush is like, uh, because Bush had planned to throw it from in front of the mound just to ensure he got it to the plate.
I know it's only 60 feet, six inches, but like still, you know, he's not a, he's not a professional athlete.
So he kind of re, re starts getting even more warmed up, goes out there and does it.
The two things that I, I will remember for sure that happened in the culture on my deathbed are the Challenger explosion.
I was 10 years old.
I remember watching it on television in 1986 and that pitch.
uh because i just you know it was everyone was tuned in to both of those things uh and um so i think that interestingly enough just very quickly on w bush he's not really a team sports guy interestingly enough even though his dad was really into baseball he's much more into like endurance sports he's still mountain bikes he you know he ran all the time in crawford texas he's much more like an individual endurance sports guy than he is like team sports interestingly enough
So I think you have to think of Obama.
It's so hard now because, you know, he's such a giant cultural figure.
But if you if you think of Barack Obama just on paper, you don't know anything about him other than his background and his name and stuff.
This is a kid who was clearly of two worlds, right?
Kenyan father, Kansas white mother raised in Hawaii.
right he is constantly and he writes about this in dreams of my father and you know he he was constantly caught betwixt in between these two worlds and he never really felt a part of either of them there's a there's a scene i recount in the book he only meets his father his his birth father twice in his entire life one is at christmas when he's 11 or 12 years old
and his father brings him and gives him a basketball.
Now, it's a very weird gift.
It might not seem like it now, but it's a very weird gift.
Basketball at that time was not big in Africa, where his father was living, nor had Barry, as he was known then, Barry Obama, shown any real interest in basketball.
Like there was no reason that his dad would give him basketball.
But Obama clearly sees, he finds in basketball a place, right?
