I think if you ask people, what's your impression?
Give me five words to describe Gerald Ford.
It's unlikely, unless you're into politics, you would say athletic or athlete.
In fact, many people would say like klutz or dumb.
I think it's two comedians to blame for that, weirdly enough.
Bob Hope, who he and Ford were extremely close,
But one of Hope's running, and Bob Hope, for younger people, I mean, Bob Hope is a gigantic figure in the culture, right?
Like, I mean, you know, I don't even know that there's like a good analog comedian for him now.
Hope, one of his bits would always be, people knew he was friends with Ford.
One of his bits would be like, oh, if you need to know where Jerry Ford is on a golf course, just look for the ambulance.
It always follows him because he would hit people.
He famously hit someone with a golf ball in a pro-am.
And then there's the other bit that in the early days of Saturday Night Live, Chevy Chase would play Ford.
And he would do the bit where he'd pick up a shoe and pretend it was a phone.
You know, this idea that Ford is a dummy.
He'd knock over, knock things over like Ford is a klutz.
It's just fascinating to me because in terms of sports, Gerald Ford is the least understood great athlete ever to be in the White House.
I mean, he was unquestionably a really good natural athlete, good at lots of things.
But the perception we have of Ford in the sort of public memory is kind of a doofus, which is
not at all what he was athletically.
