And they're eager to have the technologies and the capacity to fight effectively.
The clean technologies will be one of the biggest industries of the 21st century.
And if the U.S.
says we're not interested in being a part of that, we're essentially stepping aside and letting other countries set the economic agenda for development in this really vast area.
Absolutely not being a player in one of the biggest industries of the 21st century.
They have.
And the main two areas where we have seen the endangerment finding really have teeth in combination with positive financial incentives are in improving vehicle mileage and in increasing the amount of electrons we get for each unit of greenhouse gas that's released to the atmosphere.
And both of those have improved over the years.
And the withdrawal of the endangerment finding is likely to specifically slow progress in those two areas.
It won't stop progress, however.
We already are at the stage where
Electricity from wind and solar is cheaper almost everywhere than electricity from any fossil fuel.
And we're rapidly approaching the point at which electric vehicles are cheaper to own and operate than gasoline vehicles.
Well, I'm not a lawyer, but from the perspective of being a scientist, the evidence for endangerment, do greenhouse gases cause climate changes that endanger public health and well-being?
The answer is absolutely, clearly yes.
The legal question has a few nuances beyond that, but I think the core scientific question should be prominent in this decision, and I would love to see a legal system that could put appropriate emphasis on the science.
