Well, the ramifications, of course, would be catastrophic.

Remember, all the war industry after the breakup of the Soviet Union, I think Colin Powell made a statement, I can't build a military based on the threat from Cuba and jihadists.

So they needed a new enemy.

It became Russia.

And I was there, by the way, Jimmy.

I covered the

revolutions in Eastern Europe, and I covered the unification of Germany.

And there were very clear promises made to Gorbachev not to extend NATO beyond the borders of a unified Germany.

I was in the room when Hans-Dietrich Genscher made those promises and James Baker made that promise.

Well, then, of course, the arms industry – I was – a few years ago was in Poland and there's a billboard from Raytheon all over the place.

Well, they knew that if they could manufacture an enemy in Russia –

Then all of the Eastern Bloc countries would have to reconfigure their military equipment to be NATO compatible.

That was billions and billions in profits.

And then you had this myth of the unipolar world.

We're the only ones.

I'm talking about the American Empire.

We can do whatever we want.

Russia is a failed state.

It doesn't matter.

And so they did expand NATO, which was opposed by Gorbachev, opposed by Yeltsin, and, of course, opposed by Putin.
