What they've done is just inflict pain on the rest of the world.
And nobody knows how this is going to end at this point.
They didn't appear to have a plan.
They didn't appear to have any idea of what they were trying to achieve or how they were going to end it.
So New Zealand should be very principled in saying, we don't want to be part of that.
We don't want to be involved in that in any way.
On the other hand, there is a case for Ukraine where we say, actually, we really support you.
We're not going to have boots on the ground.
We're not going to have troops there.
But we are going to continue to support Ukraine to fight for their own freedom because they're fighting for values that are important to us.
I think there's been a total lack of leadership there.
We should have recognised Palestine as a state three years ago.
I regret we didn't quite get there when I was in government.
We were very close and then we lost the election.
We would have done that after the election had we been re-elected and it's time for New Zealand to do that.
We are not going to be the biggest, most powerful voice around the world, but we can be the voice worth listening to.
And so that means being principled, being independent, and speaking up for the things that matter to New Zealanders.
My why is pretty simple, really.
I think about all the kids who wake up every morning who don't have the opportunities that I had when I was a kid or that my kids are going to have.
And I don't think that's right.
