But the things that I remember and to be honest, I think the books I want to read are about people.
And I wanted to put a spotlight on who are the people who actually figured out how to make government work.
because everybody tells me all the time the government cannot work.
It's a mess.
Who actually figured out how to steer it to make markets work for the most part better with some of these exceptions like Greenspan?
Although even there, we should learn from what he did because he was a powerful guy.
So I wrote the book so it can be for everybody because it's about the stories of these individuals and exactly what they were doing.
It's a collection of a dozen of these people and their journeys.
And to be honest, as a researcher,
It was so much more fun to be able to get into their letters, what they'd call their diary books, their appointments, what they were writing, their correspondence.
I even, in some cases, interviewed their kids to find out what they were like as parents.
I really went all in.
Those details really mattered.
So when we look at a character like Nancy Teeters, who was the first female governor of the Federal Reserve, I did all of those things.
Her daughter was super helpful.
Once you understood that this was a fierce woman who on her first day at the Fed, first woman ever in the room, enormous cavernous space, you know, dozens of people around the table.
She walks in and she's wearing a Corvette red dress.
And all of these, like, you know, fuddy-duddy white men in their gray suits, like, look at her and are like, what the... You know, and she sits down and she takes the table, she takes the power, and she ends up using it during what we call the Volker shot to make...
to lower unemployment and get us out of the recession faster.
And it's just such, her story is inspiring, but it conjoins with the story of how do you make government work in a way.
