it's a complicated idea you know I find that even on this I've been talking about the book for a couple weeks now and people really don't like government I get it a lot of time government isn't working

And then when it does work, we almost don't see it.

I was talking with somebody last week about how he was saying government never works.

And I happen to be in the back of an Uber on the phone with him.

And I was like, right, but I'm on a road built by government.

with a driver that is licensed by government, talking on a phone that has GPS because of all those satellites in the air because of government, where the touchscreen itself was a result of R&D funding.

And that's not to say that Apple and Steve Jobs and Tim Cooks weren't brilliant.

In fact, we have to have those private sector entrepreneurs to get it over the finish line.

But government is...

Many of the ingredients that are just making a simple phone call.

I mean, we could do a similar kind of comparison here for a Substack Live.

Here we are.

The Internet was invented by government dollars.

So I think what I'm trying to say is that idea, though, that we need two things, private sector innovation and smart, effective government.

And those two things have to work together.

to create prosperity is just a little more complex than something that says, well, mostly we just need markets to do their own thing.

I think it's like, that's a simpler idea and it doesn't, you know, require us to believe in and work hard to make government work better.

And so we fall back into that.

I fell back into that.

It's a thing that we all do, but I wrote the book to say, no, we got to craft markets to make them work better.
