Right after the ruling went into effect in 2018, the unions were supposed to stop collecting these agency fees from workers.

So that went away quickly.

But also what's begun to happen in some cases is that workers, now that they can opt out of the union, have begun to do so.

So the unions have lost the agency fee payers and they've lost employees.

So in terms of magnitude, one state union in Washington state had lost about, I believe it was about 27 percent of the people who had been contributing financially to the union.

So it was a pretty steep loss there.

The membership rate or the unionization rate, as it's called, still is much higher than it is in the private sector.

In the public sector for government workers,

That rate was 33.9 percent in 2018.

That's far higher than the 6.4 percent in the private sector.

That's true.

And some labor experts I spoke to said that, you know, there is more union militancy.

There's more organizing activity.

Unions have redoubled their efforts to try to hold on to their members and also attract new members.

So that has sort of blunted some of the effect of this Supreme Court ruling.

Well, in some cases, there was one union I spoke to that has hired more organizers.

So they are going out and trying to organize, you know, more members to come into the union, trying to retain those members.

But also they're, you know, trying to organize new workplaces.

So they're representing different blocks of workers as well.
