There are some conservative groups that are running campaigns that are aimed at persuading government employees that they can opt out of their dues.
And this is another sore point for unions.
Some of these campaigns involve billboards, but also direct messaging to workers, even through texts or direct mailings.
And they're telling these workers, you can save significant amounts of money if you opt out of the union, which you can do now.
A lot of that has to do with shifts in the economy overall.
So in areas that were heavily unionized, like manufacturing, there's been a lot of shifts, increasing automation.
But also globalization has had huge effects.
And the opening of non-union manufacturing plants in the South, for instance, has had major effects in areas like steel manufacturing, auto manufacturing and other areas like that.
So it's been a gradual erosion that has really been unstoppable by unions.
