Pat Summerall was sober for the last 21 years of his life, but it was a hard-earned kind of boot camp for her in dealing with larger-than-life men with difficult personalities.

And she, of course, went on to run Ron DeSantis's

successful campaign for governor of Florida in 2018 and, of course, is famously now Donald Trump's White House chief of staff.

She'd be the first to tell you that she, in fact, she said to me,

I'm kind of an expert at that.

I specialize in it, she said, about dealing with men with big personalities.

Part of the fascination, I think, of her relationship with her father, Pat Summerall, is that she bonded with Trump.

Because she knew all about, not only was she a sports junkie, which Trump loves to talk about, but she absorbed the zeitgeist of 1970s Manhattan.

And she, that whole bygone era of the Copacabana and Sammy Davis Jr.

And she could talk with Trump about stuff like that, which he just loves.

And it was part of their bonding experience.
