To the right side of the room,
Rhett's reflection turns younger and covered in bandages and medical foam as he lies in the medical wing of a Grimnir company space station.
The doctor arrives, telling him his arm and eye are simply not salvageable, but his actions in battle were heroic and admirable.
Cold comfort.
Despite the words, they rang hollow as a company sergeant arrives next, telling them that despite his actions, he is no longer capable of serving in the Indigo Company and perform at the same level of combat prowess that their clients expect and demand.
He would not lose his job, but he was being recommissioned and restationed.
He is shipped across the galaxy,
discarded by his old company, including all of the brothers and sisters in arms that he fought for and would have died for.
He almost did die for them.
He lost his arm and eye for them.
And now he is demoted to mechanic duty on the fringes of the galaxy after being pumped full of chemicals to manage the pain.
And the pain was beyond physical.
And Rhett knows how to deal with it.
He builds scaffolding around it, justifies it, intellectualizes it, and refuses to let it help him.
He allows it to fuel his work.
He's good at it.
And that feels good.
He becomes detached from the pain.
He becomes colder and colder, and the machinery on Rhett spreads across his entire body until he is nothing more than a machine.
On the left side of the room, Pike becomes youthful and optimistic as he turns into a teenager before your eyes.
