And honestly, for most of my life, I loved it.
And then one day, when I was in my early 20s, a close friend started bragging about a Seattle Seahawks beating my Eagles.
Talking shit while friends' teams are playing is pretty normal.
But it never felt normal to me, and it always felt like a personal attack.
In this moment, we were sitting in a prison day room watching TV.
I noticed as the game went on and he continued to disrespect the Eagles, a real anger began to fester deep within me.
I don't even think he noticed how angry I was becoming.
So finally, I stood up and in a fit of rage, I shoved him to the ground.
When he jumped to his feet and challenged me for putting my hands on him, without a word, I punched him as hard as I could in the face and yelled, fuck your dumb ass Seahawks.
i looked around and see if the prison guards or anyone else had seen the interaction when i noticed they didn't i walked away i wasn't embarrassed i attribute this scenario to me just being a typical eagles fan we eventually made up as friends but things were never the same between us
There were other instances, altercations over the Eagles and me defending them as if they were my first unborn child.
I would threaten people with violence for talking about a player or break a TV over a bad call by a ref.
The list goes on and on.
Sometimes I would let the anger build as people would clap for another team against mine, especially when it was Cowboy fans, to the point where I would literally be shaking.
I was so mad.
As I started to process what brought me to prison, taking another human life, I had to dive deep into how I used and thought of violence as a solution to solve my issues.
Luckily, I was able to be mentored by other men in prison who'd long worked through such complications with their lives as they worked towards what remorse and accountability looked like for them.
In my 30s, while working on earning my college degree and fighting to pass fitness reform legislation, I met an incredible woman, Chelsea.
We met through our love of advocacy and community-centered work.
We fell in love, and our love for each other developed in a beautiful way.
