Yeah, I mean, we were about 400 Gardaí down or traffic Gardaí down specifically from the height of numbers back in 2009.
We were promised 150 new road traffic Gardaí a couple of years ago.
I think we've got about half of that.
So this, as John said, we're talking about tragedies in people's lives, but they are preventable.
There are things we can do, measures we can and should be taking to do that.
Enforcement is huge and is lacking on our roads at the moment.
The Gardaí play a role there.
Traffic cameras, red light cameras, average speed cameras all play a role.
We have very few static fixed cameras in the country, less than 10.
And engineering and design of our roads and our junctions is really important.
And that's where I'd like to see government, both TDs and councillors,
speaking up when local councils are proposing new redesigned roundabouts or junctions in their area and supporting it because these are measures that do save lives.
Yeah, I mean, look, we in the Labour Party, we see that there's a conflict at the heart of the RSA at the moment.
They're both poacher and gamekeeper when it comes to cars on our roads.
You know, they make money from having more cars on our roads through driving tests and licensing.
And at the same time, they're encouraging alternatives, cycling and walking and trying to make that safer, which, you know, so there just seems to be a conflict there.
And the minister's
The minister's decision to ignore this independent Indycon report that suggested that the RSA would be split up, to me, just seems like a cost-saving measure or something that's a little bit too difficult for the minister to take on.
So, look, we're awaiting the minister's proposals on this and we will be scrutinising them.
I don't think so.
