Just before I get to the Carrickmacross incident, I just want to go back to get your analysis of that question which we just discussed.

I mean, how badly, in your opinion, do you think this group is compromised?

This is one of the conundrums, which I do find it hard to understand.

Now, the CIRU political movement deny, obviously, any direct link to the new IRA, although equally, obviously, they share the thinking of the group, and most security analysts, and indeed security services, believe that there is a link between the two groups.

This is the thing...

If you're going to be in a secret army, why do you also turn up to political demonstrations?

Why does a secret army dress up and march in public?

Surely that that is one of the basic things that the Gardaí do.

in order to compromise the new IRA, is to simply watch demonstrations by Siro and to take pictures of those who are dressed in paramilitary uniforms.

One would question why people do that.

If you really wanted to be a secret clandestine army or paramilitary group, that's not what you would do.

But they deem it politically necessary.

And of course, we're talking about people in general, not any specific individuals here.

But let's get to this Carrickmacross incident.

Two people have been charged in relation to that.

And of course, they are innocent until proven guilty in the courts.

But on July the 22nd, as part of an intelligence-led operation, Gardaí,

attached to the special detective unit stopped a car travelling north on the N2 near Carrickmacross.

That's in County Monaghan.

That vehicle, the Gardaí said, had been under surveillance since leaving Dublin and was reportedly heading for Derry.
