To discuss this, I was joined in studio by Adrian Cummins, CEO of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, who lobbied hard for the VAT rate cut.

And on the line by Barry Rountree, Assistant Professor of Economics at Trinity College, who's opposed to this policy move by the Minister for Finance, Simon Harris.

Adrian Cummins, we're recording this on the day that the rate cut has taken effect and you've described it as a landmark day.

Why is it a landmark day?

Now, consumers listen to this because they're hard pressed as well.

And they've had to put up with a lot of inflation over the last few years.

And they'll be wondering, will anybody be reducing their prices as a result of this?

Do you expect any of your members to cut the prices?

Yeah.

How many members of your association?

Cost of living crisis.

So what was it roughly a year ago?

So you've lost 500 members?

Net?

Net, yeah.

Because obviously you'd get new members coming on board.

Correct, correct.

Because there's a couple of interesting data points out this week.

Reports from PwC and Deloitte and they look at insolvencies.

And PwC said that company insolvencies in the hospitality sector have fallen by more than a quarter so far this year when compared with 2025.
