But there are all kinds of groups in the workplace who need greater flexibility.
Women, of course, are the ones who sort of spring to mind because, yes, the unpaid caring responsibilities, whether it's children or grandchildren or adults, tends to fall more heavily on our shoulders.
But in reality, flexibility is good
for all workers.
I mean, people have said to Brave Starts, which is one of the organisations that I mentioned in a piece, that they would value flexibility from an employer more highly than high pay.
And I think that says it all.
I saw a similar study in the FT a couple of years ago saying that younger workers would also value flexibility and being able to work from home more often, much more than a 10% pay rise.
You know, that's one of those surveys that really sticks in the mind.
You know, people value being able to have flexibility and autonomy over their working hours.
It doesn't mean that they're going to do any less work.
It just means that they're going to be able to fit their lives in around work in a bit more of a better way for them.
And employers who can be flexible are the ones who are going to get great talent at a great price.
Absolutely.
And I think people are prepared to make trade-offs as well, particularly if they've been in quite bruising, stressful professions and they want to change course for maybe the third stage of their working lives and do something that's more vocational or give something back.
I mean, like my very famous colleague, Lucy Calloway, who I'm sure your readers know and love, she famously stopped
um working at the ft retrained as an economics teacher and is now teaching sixth form in a school in the northeast of england and has set up an amazing charity called um teach um well i think it was going to be called teach last but because there's obviously teach first um oh i can't remember the name of it there you go that's the perimenopause for you but anyway look up lucy kellyway's charity she's helped
so many people into teaching um at the end of their careers who've wanted to do something different get something um more out of their their working lives and i've had so many emails as well from from readers who are saying you know we're stepping back a bit at work we're doing more volunteering we're getting more involved with charities that we want to support with um local life with you know running um services in local councils you know this doesn't stop at work
