Well, the character herself, Meredith Grey, is so complicated.
She's not likable in the traditional sense.
She was depressed.
She was guarded.
She was complicated.
She was like us.
Well, I remember β I say us as women.
I mean, truly like all of us.
Right.
Of course, because you're a girl and you don't realize what, well, first of all, you don't see examples of that in media.
And you haven't lived it yet.

I was like, how could she?
So Shonda wanted to show female ambition, female sexuality, female friendship, women who were brilliant and selfish and emotionally flawed.
So the real story isn't just how big Grey's became.
It's what Shonda was doing inside the show, rewriting what women were allowed to be on television.
She wrote women who didn't want motherhood, but weren't framed as broken for not wanting motherhood.
Christina openly said, I don't want kids and the show did not fix her.
