I wanted to use Sabine as a character to look at Irish men as an outsider, and that's exactly right.
That she doesn't come from this culture.
She comes from, even though France is a Catholic country, you know, they don't have the sexual perversions that were put on us by the Catholic Church here in Ireland.
The Italians, the French, the Spanish, the Catholicism there, I don't think it took away from the sensualities of life the way that it did here in Ireland.
And so for her to come here and court an Irishman and almost marry him was for me an opportunity to show what our misogyny looked like.
