I think for me, the inner is actually a huge space and is part of something much, much broader than actually anything on the surface.

So in that sense, I do feel like I'm participating in something kind of beyond me and previous to me.

So I don't worry too much about what might speak through me and what influences might be apparent because I read.

Of course I do.

And if it shows up in how I write, then okay.

I'm not going to get too sort of hung up on that.

I mean, it's different if it's just like really, really obvious and it's my sensibility, let's say, or it's on that level, you know what I mean?

But if it's, I don't know, kind of just sort of a subtle thing kind of creeping in here and there, I don't know.

I just think, well, all right, I'm not this, I'm not unique anyway, you know?

Why would I try and shut that out?

And I think one of the things I really like about writing, and people often say, well, it's so solitary, isn't it?

And I think it's not solitary at all, you know?

When I'm writing, I don't feel alone whatsoever.

I feel like I'm participating in this world of words that have already been written.

I'm not going to suppose that I'm the only person in the world doing this or who's ever done it.

I would be insane.

So I sort of embrace when I feel a bit of a, I don't know, a creep of Jean Rhys or something from Beckett or something from Maeve Brennan or even a voice from a film or a voice from my family.

They're all there, you know what I mean?

And I don't know where I'd be without them.

I don't know what my voice is, you know.
