So there was something that was kind of big in the early 2000s, this kind of movement, I think it originated probably in Germany, called post-dramatic theatre.

And what post-dramatic theatre was really about was this sort of, it was separating theatre from drama, because drama and theatre are sort of synonymous in people's minds.

They think, well, how can you have theatre without drama?

They're the same thing, right?

Well, no, they're not really the same thing.

Theatre is a space.

It's just a live space within which something might happen.

And that's all.

Drama is just one possibility within that.

And you mentioned Artaud.

Artaud would be on one side of that with something that was often quite, I don't know, maybe quite chaotic and almost sort of holy or sacred or something like this.

And then you had Brett perhaps on the other side.

who was disrupting the theatre conventions and drew attention to theatre conventions in order to convey a meaning about how reality is constructed.

So these were all kind of early post-dramatic techniques, if you like.

And so those kinds of things were interesting to me because they sort of aligned with, like I said, how I kind of felt about certain things, I suppose.

Like I said, they would have been there already.

but I was able to explore them within a theatre context.

And then following on from that, I just was able to kind of fill them out a bit more deeply in my own work than off the stage or whatever and just on the page.

Because when I first started to write Pond, initially I thought perhaps it would be, what I was writing would be something for the theatre.

And then I reached a point where I thought, well, no, it can just stay on the page.
