This book is set in this Japanese-ish world.
You're obviously, you've got your dad's Japanese heritage.
What has Japan meant to you in your life?
I love that.
I love that it was a bunch of schoolchildren that gave you permission to embrace this part of who you are.
So how do you do that?
When you look at all of the incredible culture that Japan has to offer, what was it that got you excited about this place?
I mean, it's such an exciting combination to be looking at ancient folklore, but also anime and Pokemon.
Take us to this world, Rain Shadow Island.
What is this place?
Before this, Naomi, you have written a novel, you've written a collection of short stories.
This book kind of signals a hard pivot into fantasy.
What drew that?
So were you that kid?
Were you the kid who was majorly into fantasy when you were young?
Yeah, and I always love hearing about people's childhoods, the books in their lives and their path to writing.
But for a lot of kids, Naomi, that dream of being a writer seems like something that is possibly unobtainable for you having your dad being Kazuo Ishiguro.
What does that mean for a kid?
