The fastball command has been something that lacked for him in the past.
It's been really good almost every time out this year.
But the other X factor is the splitter.
That was Mize's calling card.
That's what got him drafted number one.
it really had not been an effective pitch for him in the major leagues until earlier this year he started throwing it harder started throwing it from a higher arm angle is getting more deception getting more swing and miss things that are really key for casey mize's game recently that splitter's kind of gone away again where it hasn't necessarily been competitive hasn't had that same diving action his sliders weren't as good last time out either so
Yeah, Mize is not going to pitch in this series, but I think him dialing in the splitter is key to kind of getting him back on track and back to continuing to kind of write that feel good narrative, because obviously he has been through a lot mentally, physically, spiritually, you name it.
He's got a great story, but obviously for that to continue to be such a good story, it kind of got to get back to who he was in the lead up to the All-Star break.
Yeah, it's really rewarding to see kind of someone's whole journey or at least whole professional journey.
I remember spring training 2020 before COVID shut it down.
Tarek was coming off a good season in the minors and people were starting to talk about, well, OK, who's really the best pitching prospect in this organization?
Is it Scooble?
Is it Casey Mize?
Is it Matt Manning, who at the time was a big prospect?
And I remember watching Scooble throw a live BP session that was just lights out.
Kirk Gibson was watching from a tower up above and was just kind of like losing his mind over the action on some of Scooble's pitches and watch him a little closer that spring.
And I was pretty early on the train of like, I think Scooble's the best prospect.
Now, would I have guessed he would be a Cy Young winner and the best pitcher in the world?
Not really.
And that's the incredible thing about it.
