The the standout was the NFL and the States where they actually not only shared players around.
like the draft.
The weakest team got the best player, but also they shared the television contract which was massive.
And so uh that led to a a discussion about what's the best way to run a s a sporting competition and we decided to drop copied the NFL model and uh the rest is history.
And that's been a seminal choice.
I think people over time lose sight of the significance of it.
But the reality is if you look at, say, the European competitions, the same one or two teams win all the time.
And and to some extent they're safe from the embarrassment of that by the fact that their strong teams play in the European competition.
So they they can't afford to equalize their domestic competitions because then they'll they'll cut the Manchester cities and the Arsenals back to size.
But uh if we ran our competition here as the Europeans run their competition, there would be just two and just possibly three teams that win all the time, like Bayern Munich does in Germany.
and Barcelona and Riama did redu in Spain.
And so um
Uh and that would be a dreadful outcome for a competition to have.
And I uh one of the party games I sometimes play is what would be the one or two teams here that would actually be the dominant ones that I I don't find it hard to I mean, West Coast would be one of 'em.
and possibly Collingwood, but um
Sydney might give it a shake, but uh there wouldn't be many and the rest of us would be also Rans.
I have decided it's always unpopular.
And that's one of the reasons why I think it's really important yes, it's important of course to understand what the fans are thinking, but it's terribly it's a terrible mistake just to be bound by that.
And so football can't be run by opinion polls.
