And I think the big difference was that I think I brought to the conversation a different perspective, which was that in every industry that I knew of there were winners and losers.
And often the winners are in positions which are hard to challenge because they're they rest on a franchise which is very hard to change.
And so the question was, was that happening in football?
Now it was pretty obvious to everybody that there are massive differences in the supporter bases.
Like Collingwood had five times as many supporters as the weakest VFL team at the time.
And what was happening as the competition went professional, and it'd been an amateur competition and it was going professional, was that those supporter bases were becoming monetized.
And so if you had five times as many supporters as another team, you probably had five times as many members, you had five times as many corporate sponsors, um, you had five times as many television eyeballs.
And so the rich were getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, and it had nothing whatsoever to do with the management of the clubs.
In fact, I did a bunch of analyses at the time which showed that the weakest clubs were probably better managed.
They won a higher proportion of their games on the field.
They turned a higher proportion of their supporter base into memberships, but it didn't matter because supporter bases are built over a hundred years.
And that and that, by the way, is one of the the enduring lessons that I've learned that we
When you think about teams in the competition, it's generational stuff.
You just can't have three or four good years and change the size of your supporter base.
So I we looked at the overseas competitions and found only two competitions in the world that were financially stable.
In other words, half the teams weren't losing money.
One was the Bundesliga in Germany and one was the NFL in the States.
The Bundesliga in Germany uh had a pretty tight rule that if you um went broke you're out of the competition and it happened once to a team so nobody spent more than they earned.
Which means that they are all viable.
But the positions in the latter stayed in place.
