And so uh the progress from there to now is just absolutely extraordinary.
We've got
Um eighteen clubs, all of them viable.
Um a national competition, massive T V audiences, um and so forth.
P players paid a lot.
Um and if you want one number, which I think goes to the heart of an extraordinary change, in the mid nineteen eighties the annual T V contract was three million dollars.
It's now six hundred and fifty million dollars.
And so if anybody wants one number against which they can explain the changes that have taken place, that's probably it.

Um the blue book was uh my accidental meeting with the AFL.
I was doing work at Macquarie Bank and one of the new
uh newly appointed commissioners to the new commission, Graham Samuel, was the running the Melbourne office and invited me to come down to talk to the AFL because the Commission was beset with uh any number of suggestions on the way they should proceed and there was no consensus.
So I got involved in in with the the new VFL Commission on sorting out where the competition should go to.
And I think perhaps the seminal moment was there was enormous inequality in the competition.
teams were making the finals every year.
Um probably ten of the twelve teams were broke.
The Vic Victorian regulator had even challenged the VFL over the number of teams that they didn't think were viable.
And so the question was how is this to be solved?
And uh the general there are any number of solutions around football, including too much handball, um, not enough dry areas.
Um but the one that was most popular was that the weak teams were poorly managed and just needed to get their act together.
