I also think um so I talk about this, you know, Christine Korsgaard, who's far smarter than I am, yeah, has this discussion about, well, you know, it who I think has your intuitions on this and has this discussion about, well, what do pains have in common?

Uh what could the you know, the pain of dropping a brick on your foot, I can't remember what the example is, and heartbreak and so on all have in common.

And she ends up very skeptical that there is anything

That they could have in common.

Um, except maybe, you know, something like the feel.

Uh I mean it she goes back and forth on this.

So it was a very nice discussion.

Uh, but in general, people who haven't made this distinction between, you know, physical pain and painfulness, when they go through and try to say, well, okay, what's common to all of these things lumped together, they have a very hard time uh spelling that out.

So it becomes a a philosophically very complicated and

Tangentous position.

Um I think it's Adam Swenson has a nice discussion of this.

Uh there's a similar problem with pleasure as well.

So I think whereas if you separate the two out, I think you get a very nice clean picture on both ends.

So that's a kind of philosophical advantage.

Now, as for this question about uh the contents, I should say sort of although I'm always glossing the contents with ordinary English sentences like don't put weight on that foot.

Uh presumably, you know, obviously these are not going to be well, maybe not obviously, they're not going to be English sentences.

Um and in fact I take it in the book, you know, when I spell out the sort of more formal conditions for the imperatives, they're

gonna be quite a bit more complicated and they have a fair bit of internal structure.
