Uh I also think that there are ordinary pains that aren't particularly painful.
People tend not to be aware of these, but uh
you know, unless their attention is called to them, is precisely because they you don't suffer from them, you tend not to think about them very much.
So I think unproblematic postural adjustments uh are the easiest one.
So often when you're sitting and this is actually a very important function of the pain system,
Uh when you're sitting, you know, you you feel a little bit of pain, you shift your position, uh, it goes away, it's fine.
Uh if you don't do that, if you're in a situation where you can't do it, uh it becomes very painful and ultimately very bad for you.
But ordinarily, these are these kind of small minor pains that come and go, and I think they're kind of the equivalent of mild hunger.
They're pain and they still motivate you, uh, but they don't feel particularly bad and you don't suffer from them.
Uh there are pathological cases as well, but I wanted to try to come up with some non-pathological ones in the book.
So I think there's good evidence that they come apart.
And I also think and this is kind of important for the argument, I think they motivate different things.
So I think as I you know argued in the first part, physical pain what it does is it motivates you to protect the body part uh
from certain kinds of harms in order that uh it might, you know, in order to preserve bodily integrity.
Painfulness, on the other hand, considered as this kind of second order state, I think uh
has as its object the first order sensation and tells you something like get rid of that first order sensation.
And these can court.
So take in the uh in the book I talk about something like being painfully lonely.
Um
