It's sometimes called hurt or suffering or something like that, which I conceive of as a second order sensation that can qualify a huge variety of different first order mental states.
Um can qualify pains, but it can also qualify so for example, you can be painfully hungry, painfully tired.
Um it's uh often attaches to emotions, and people do often ask me about emotional pain.
So you can be painfully lonely, you can be painfully heartbroken.
Grief is a paradigmatically painful emotion.
I think there are probably aesthetic pains of watching a particularly bad movie or looking at a particularly ugly painting or something like that.
So I think it's actually quite wide what could what think something like hurt or painfulness or suffering.
I use all these kind of interchangeably.
Um it's quite wide what these qualify.

I think pains mostly feel painful, and that's kind of where the name comes from.

Hare points out, he's got a nice discussion of this distinction from the sixties, ordinary English is in many ways ambiguous, which is no surprise, between you w the word pain can refer to any of these or the conglomeration depending.
Uh, but I think it's worth separating them out.
So I've d kind of I have a couple of arguments in the book about this.
Here are I think the two most useful ones.
One is just this dissociation argument.
So I think on the one hand there are painful things that aren't physical pain.
So I just mentioned a bunch of those, the emotional pains and so on.
