The chairman of the joint chiefs and uh the deputy secretary of defense are both far more in influential in any case.

I also think that for most of these appointments, uh, the bar is pretty low.
Historically a service secretary in the army or the navy or the air force was treated more or less as a a an errand boy or errand girl.
by the uh senior military leaders.
Their job was to take the budget that the generals put together, go across and make the argument for the for the service.
And that was about it.
Now the sad part is that if you read the law, go into US uh Title ten, it states very clearly, unambiguously, that for instance the Secretary of the Army is the commander of the United States Army.
The Secretary of the Navy is the commander of the United States Navy, not the Chief of Naval Operations.
A lot of people don't know that.
Uh and as a result many secretaries of service, because I worked for one
They come in and they never even understand their own legal authorities.
They're so busy being given fancy jackets and strange little hats and told how great they are by the generals and sort of force fed nonsense that by the time they figure out what's really going on, it's time for a new administration.
And that's the other problem.
There's just no continuity.
There's no no real national military strategy.
There never has been.
