The people that he spent his life trying to defeat, Americans actually helped them get rid of him.
But, yeah, and the courage, when you think about it, it really requires a mental toughness that actually gets the body to move.
You've really got no physical courage without the mental strength behind it.
And he had that.
The story about his experience with the Kurds in northern Iraq for nine months before the U.S.
invasion tells you everything about him.
And it also tells you a lot about the CIA as well.
It's a fascinating story in its own right.
with all sorts of scoundrels showing up.
I would suggest tracking that book down, and you will enjoy reading it.
But in all of this, there's also a sense of humor.
You know, he had been there for nine months with his teams, and they had, you know, had near misses, of course.
And when the invasion was about to start, the U.S.
Army was planning a massive airdrop into the area to take the place.
Well, they had already—Sam's crowd had already—
Taken it.
And he had to be talked out of not sitting on the drop zone in a beach chair, probably wearing an Aloha shirt when the army dropped on it.
And it's a hilarious story.
Another good one I just got to mention is one of the Turkish intelligence officer who'd been with in their place had done something he shouldn't have done.
And Sam said, look, if I had done that to you in your place, you'd have shot me.
