They don't care what cost they inflict on the Russian people so much as they want to get to the end state of bringing Ukraine back into the fold, or at least haven't been to the knee to recognize that Russia

is the big brother in that region in that relationship and it just seems like in spite of Ukraine putting up a much better fight than they thought they would be able to they are unwilling to surrender or negotiate or do anything in good faith to bring that to a close until they achieve their political goals

Some people say that's Vladimir Putin, but as I look through history, I think that's pretty much the Russian technique throughout history.

I don't think it's unique to Putin, and I don't think it would necessarily change if we had a change in leadership there.

I'm not sure the approach in Ukraine would change.

They're going to be stubbornly, they don't care how many people, how many soldiers they lose.

They don't care what kind of temporary economic setbacks they have.

their eyes on the prize of bringing as much of Ukraine back into the Russian Federation or back into Russia as possible.

Well...

I will tell you that the deterrent of NATO is the reason, and because our president has gone and beat NATO about the head and shoulders to increase their defense spending and their ability to take care of their own backyard, that I think that that has happened concurrently with Russia trying to grind this out.

And they can't really...

escalate the conflict without risking NATO involvement, which would be catastrophic too.

That would really set things in a different direction.

And I think they're trying to avoid that.

But I'm not sure that this is completely off the table in their mind.

I will tell you that I think NATO was a deterrent, but I don't think that it's something that Russia thinks is completely, I don't think it's something that Russia believes would completely stop them from accomplishing their goal either.

So they're not completely rational.

They're a lot more rational than Iran.

But they have a long history of being stubborn and being able to endure whatever hardship to get to their political ends.

And I think they believe that will be the case here, even if they have to drag this out and play footsies as opposed to the one big push that would bring NATO into it.
