And I think if the ban had been, and this is just my own suspicion, conspiracy theory, if the ban hadn't been so long for this thing, maybe Jim McGuinness might have received some form of a ban.

But it's not a good look and it reflects poorly on the GA's disciplinary system.

So does Sean Herson's common sense have to align with the other GAA referee's common sense?
I'd make the argument that what Ger Brennan did was more deserving of a ban than what Jim McGuinness did.
But the rule doesn't make any distinction.
And that's the point.
And the whole idea of referees applying common sense...
That's such a dangerous space to go into because referees are all different individuals.
They don't have a shared common sense.
We only have the rule book to go on.
And if we can't selectively decide which rules to implement and when.
When something is as black and white as this, I'm not sure that discretion can be applied.
This is the non-application of a very specific rule by a referee.
It's not up to that referee to decide whether that rule is overly penal or not.
Well, then you have the Wild West rule.
Then you have referees, some referees applying the rule, some referees not applying the rule.
