I can I I c I can see where your texture is c coming from, but the problem that that that I have is that when this illegal content goes up on platforms such as TikTok and you can see it generating likes and you can see it generating v views and and you can see how addictive that is.
We already know the research is there, how addictive social media is for young people and the fact that none of this content
is is ever, is hardly getting t t taken down.
I I think that's reckless in the extreme.
Well, if if you look at the way th things have gone in i in the last f ten, fifteen years and with the advent of say so called citizen journalism, I I can see to a certain degree um why somebody might might think in their own head that that was a good I uh idea to do.
Um it's not something I I do myself and like it it is a gross intrusion of o of somebody's dignity.
And privacy.
They are absolutely loathed to do that.
And th th they are they are publishers.
And I mean this is something my own colleague Alan Kelly and the chair of the Oroctus Media
committee um has been has been uh on about for I'd say well over a year now and and and has even introduced some legislation around this.
But there does seem to be a real a slight reluctance there as well from government to put the heavy hand on these social media companies given that so many of them are headquartered here.
But I I I really think that we need to force them, in my view, to turn off the recognition
recommender algorithm system that's actually, you know, driving a a lot of this, but also um to make them responsible for the contents that they publish on their platforms.
I I think that may be already happening, is my understanding of it.
Um
That's that's a hundred percent true.
And I think sometimes people feel nowadays, since the advent of social media, that the first thing you should do is, you know, film now, publish then and maybe check later.
Whereas, you know, you know, as somebody who's been working as a journalist um for many, many years.
normally, you know, you check, you film, then you publish.
