Wouldn't it have been more narratively interesting if this is how Mike finds out about a curse on Darkscore Lake?
If he's going through the things left behind by his wife as he is haunted, metaphorically, by his grief.
And as he investigates the mystery of the secrets of Joe, discovers these books.
He looks for these books.
