It makes total sense, really, to taper them off eventually, right?
So nothing will change in August.
They'll come back to it in September and gradually unwind those supports because we're only reading today about talks in Doha between Iran and the United States and conflicting reports there of who's actually meeting who.
The question is going to be what they do in the budget, though, isn't it, really?
Because you could gradually unwind those supports if the situation looks like, you know, moderates, as it were.
We say if they're going to remain elevated to the end of the year, at what point does the government have to step in again?
I think what the government will most likely look at...
is not so much petrol and diesel in the budget, it's what you do on energy and electricity.
I think that's going to be the big pinch point coming into the winter because we always hear it, don't we?
It's not so much the diesel and petrol.
Now we'll see what happens with oil prices.
But look, the decision was made last night by coalition leaders that effectively the plan is now to keep the cuts until September before gradually reversing the reductions in phases.
And they'll basically keep an eye on prices at the pumps and see where things go.
Now, look, there's nothing written down as such that, you know, you can always go back on these decisions if things break out again.
So the government's effectively giving itself a window and a bit of time here.
And as I say, a bit of summer housekeeping because the Dáil will be finishing up in a week or two.
They wanted these rural housing guidelines out there.
They had to make a decision on excise cuts.
And this is what they're doing.
