The score here of 0.93 tells us that you are aging more slowly, seven percentage points more slowly, than the average 45-year-old in the Dunedin study.
So for every calendar year that passes compared to this one year of change they experience, you're experiencing only 0.93 years.
And that result is good if you're 45 years old.
It's even better if you're above 45 because what you see on the other side of the screen here is this age patterning we observe in the need to pay.
So people's values are all over the place.
So the older you are, the faster you age.
But on average, the older you are, the faster you are aging.
So this gap becomes even bigger.
That's right.
The gap between 0.93 and what we would expect to see is larger the older you are.
In the context of the healthcare system or clinical trials, we're really looking for biomarkers that are going to be sensitive to changes in people's aging, not just readouts on how far they've come.
And so it was with the goal of devising that more sensitive biomarker that we developed this thing that we call Dunedin pace.
We had previously developed a measurement of how fast people's bodies were changing as they grew older that we called the pace of aging.
And in our work, we then modeled this pace of aging construct
which was developed by following a thousand people over 20 years and measuring different aspects of their physiology so that we could determine who was aging faster or slower directly from measurements of their organ systems.
And we modeled that from DNA methylation to produce this epigenetic speedometer.
That's where Dunedin PACE comes from.
So GrimAge functions a little bit like an odometer.
It tells you how many miles you put on the car, how close you're getting to the end.
Dunedin PACE is designed to complement that measurement as a speedometer, something that tells you how fast or slow you're moving.
