It was fascinating to watch how the Navy situation was handled.
And at this point in the story, Alexander decides to disband his Navy.
this is one of the most controversial decisions of alexander's career as you alexander fans already know and apparently was being questioned in antiquity i mean deodorus is talking about it and that's he wrote during like julius caesar's time which is hundreds of years after alexander but you get the point it's been debated a long time is this the right move or not
Modern day historians have different opinions too.
And I honestly don't know what to think myself.
I'm really, I mean, I'm just watching from afar because there's good arguments on both sides and without being able to get someone like, you know, Ptolemy up here on the stand under oath, it's going to be difficult to figure out.
what appeals to me in terms of like trying to sense what's going on is I was reading some of the good histories that I was, I'm using a sources here.
And they were talking about the difference between, you know, Alexander dealing with the Persian fleet close up when it's with him, like at Miletus versus what happens if the Persian fleet just goes and causes trouble elsewhere.
That's when you're going to miss a Navy, for example.
What if they go start causing problems in Greece?
Or what if they sort of go behind your flank and retake stuff you've already taken, which is actually what's going to happen.
but some of the other arguments have to do with the fact that what alexander's fleet is heavily outnumbered it's out quality as well do you just want it to stay there until the persians catch it and kill it so a lot of arguments but he he disbands the fleet and he keeps like 20 uh triremes and supply ships to sort of just you know for food and they carry the siege train and
And then he keeps going down the coast.
And this, again, is a problem with your navy also not being there.
You're fighting a bunch of coastal battles, and all these cities like Miletus have harbors, and they're able to be resupplied from the sea and whatnot.
And the next city he's going to run into, the next big one, is going to be the same way, but worse.
Like Miletus, only more so.
Arian and Diodorus both say that he kind of takes some cities in between Miletus and Halicarnassus, which is the big city in the distance.
Some of them come over to him.
