There's this famous incident where this queen who's been out of power comes to Alexander, you know, on the road between cities and basically, you know,
Asks him to support her in being restored.
I mean, the story basically helps set the stage for Alexander putting a bunch of these local families that have long been in power in these regions back in power.
It's part of the political game you play here.
How do you keep these cities and these regions protected?
loyal to you after you, you know, ripped them out of the Persian empire.
Well, do what the Persians were famous for doing too.
Leave the local royal family in place and then just have them be subordinate to you.
So there's a story about him doing that.
And supposedly when he meets this queen, who he's going to call mother among several women who are older than him in the Alexander story that he will basically refer to as like mother.
But once she, you know, basically throws her support behind him, a bunch of these smaller cities come over to him and then he arrives at Halicarnassus.
Halicarnassus is the birthplace of Herodotus.
It's the capital of Caria.
It is the satrap, you know, seat of power in this region.
And the satrap, the commander, the governor of this territory, the regional vice president, he's there.
And with him is old Memnon of Rhodes, right?
As we said, our one Greek character in the story that the Greeks can all sort of empathize with and get behind.
He's either the antihero or the hero on the antihero side, right?
But earlier we had talked about in the last edition, you know, whether his involvement and his importance had been sort of exaggerated by the Greek writers.
But there's no denying the fact that he's very important here and now because he's been put in command of the whole region by the great king, Darius, and given command of the fleet.
