And Diodorus says, quote,
Alexander encamped near the city and set in motion an active and formidable siege.
At first he made continued assaults on the walls with relays of attackers and spent whole days in active fighting.
Later he brought up all sorts of engines of war, filled in the trenches in front of the city with the aid of sheds to protect the workers, and rocked the towers and the curtains between them with his battering rams.
Whenever he overthrew a position of the wall, he attempted by hand-to-hand fighting to force an entry into the city over the rubble.
But Memnon at first easily beat off the Macedonians assaulting the walls, for he had large numbers of men in the city.
where the siege engines were attacking, he issued from the citadel at night with numbers of soldiers and applied fire to the machines.
Fierce fights occurred in front of the city, in which the Macedonians showed far superior prowess, but the Persians had the advantage of numbers and of firepower, for they had the support of men who fought from the walls, using engines to shoot darts, which they then killed some of the enemy and disabled others."
Well, if you read Arian, you see that there's a lot that is sort of, you know, covered in all that stuff that he's talking about.
But it's clear that Alexander's facing, you know, engines of war, as they're called, artillery, as he breaks into these places once he knocks the walls down.
I mean, that is literally...
overcoming all of the typical battlefield advantages the macedonians have and putting them in a really really tough situation this is where you get to see that they would be good and dangerous soldiers regardless of the formation they were using and regardless of you know whether or not they could use their giant long spears together because this is hand-to-hand stuff as i said with engines of war shooting at you
Now, in the Aryan version of this story, he basically says it was no problem, and then he gives the casualty reports, and it sounds like it wasn't all that easy.
He writes, quote,
A night sally from Halicarnassus to set fire to the towers and the other engines which had been moved up or were nearly in position was countered and easily beaten back within the walls by the Macedonian guards, supported by other troops roused by the alarm.
About 170 of the men from Halicarnassus were killed, including Neoptolemus, the son of Arabaeus, the brother of Amentus, one of those who had deserted to Darius.
The losses among Alexander's troops amounted to 16, but some 300 were wounded, as this was a sudden action at night and they were not wearing any proper protective armor, end quote.

But any way you slice it, that's a lot of injuries, right?
This wasn't such a minor affair, and this will be done by the defenders several times.
