When you read Diodorus, for example, he talks about this happening in relays.
So imagine most of the army isn't working.
They're just sitting around watching.
Again, another aspect of ancient warfare that's different.
You don't have shells and bullets that can hit you from a distance.
You can be kind of close up and perfectly safe and watch.
Maybe 5% of the army just throwing that out there is the one actually working on a piece of the wall at any given time while everybody else watches and they rotate, right?
But it's a 24-7 job.
It certainly sounds like it because both Arian and Theodorus talk about it, that there are prepared things that they put up to sort of shield the people who are working.
So think of like wicker, um...
Or something like a Civil War rather than a First World War trench situation where you put up things.
If you were a kid with a treehouse and someone was throwing dirt clods at you, you might put up a board to keep them from being able to do that.
So you think about something like that.
because it's going to be a process as you begin to fill in the moat and you have to fill in the moat to get the siege engines close enough.
And well, why don't I let Diodorus pick up the story?

And the difference, by the way, between Diodorus and Arian in their accounts of this is that
deodorus has it be a extremely difficult thing for alexander arian's weird because he makes it sound like nothing was a big deal but then when he tells you how many people were injured and whatnot in any given situation you kind of go sounds like a big deal so um
The real problem Alexander has is that because Halicarnassus has a giant open harbor controlled by the Persian fleet and Alexander really doesn't have a fleet, that he can't shut this city down.
Diodorus, in my C. Bradford Wells translation, picks up the story with Alexander arriving right outside Halicarnassus and starting the siege.
