And who did he specifically leave out in the inscription for everybody to see for long?
Well, the Spartans.
Yikes, that's a turning of the knife right there.
The Athenians must have had mixed feelings because they would have loved, I imagine, to have been honored and had the Spartans shafted by the same honor, but they don't like Alexander either.
So mixed sort of feelings, maybe.
But Alexander's letting everybody know, we're here, we've won, we're still going.
And he sends a bunch of the Greek survivors from the Battle of the Granicus who fought for the Persians back to Greece in chains as a message that this better not happen again because, you know, under the terms of our leagues of the Greek thing, we are not supposed to be fighting against one another.
This is a war of Greeks against barbarians.
Fight on the other side, expect to die or come home in chains and be a slave.
The good news for us after the Battle of the River Granicus is our two main sources, Arian and Diodorus, who had such terrible disagreements about how that battle went, get back into line, broadly speaking.
And so we're on firmer ground for what happens in this next part of the story.
And Alexander's in a consolidation phase here.
He has to sort of collect his winnings.
from defeating that Persian army, that regional version, I guess you could say, of a Persian field army at the Granicus.
But he's got to deal with now the cities in Asia Minor, right?
Anatolia, modern-day Turkey.
It's a big area.
Yeah.
And I can't help but notice if you zoom out and look at the big strategic situation, I mean, he's at a real disadvantage here because he's got a lot of work to still do to make sure that area is subdued and it's going to involve, you know, wearing and tearing on the army and all this kind of stuff.
Meanwhile, the arch foe, the one he knows he's going to have to deal with in some huge knockdown drag out battles, is free.
