This is, I think, what gnaws at me almost more than anything, because I'm lucky to represent the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island in lower Manhattan.
And what they stand for is what I think this country stands for, which is a new country built by immigrants seeking a different type of government, a democracy, equal rights, and a refuge from horrors all around the world.
And that's what my American values are.
And I think that's what so many are.
And for this administration, not only to target and demonize immigrants, but to do it without any regard for the law is not just illegal and unlawful, as you pointed out, but it is truly un-American.
Why are they being allowed to get away with this?
Well, they're being allowed to get away with this to this point, and I stress to this point, in part because the Republicans who control the majority in Congress are completely rolling over and not doing a single thing to conduct oversight to be that check and balance on the administration.
They're also doing this because Donald Trump has hired lackeys whose only qualification is loyalty to him, not to the Constitution.
And now it's not a huge surprise that Donald Trump does not care about the Constitution or the law.
But what has happened and different in Trump 2.0 than Trump 1.0 is everybody he's hired is largely mostly incompetent.
But their qualification is loyalty to him.
And so they are literally doing whatever he and in the case of immigration, Stephen Miller want to do.
That's it.
Well, now you have then you'll have private lawsuits and those are ongoing, but they take a long time.
And our legal system is overburdened and is too slow.
And in some cases with this very, very corruptly political Supreme Court, not impartial and objective.
Why do people forget that?
Part of that story drives me so much because my grandmother came through Ellis Island.
She and her family escaped anti-Semitism during the pogroms in Russia.
and her mom her five brothers and and she came through ellis island they were welcomed here they settled the uh my uh uncle my grandmother's brother opened up a fruit and vegetable wholesale business made enough money to send all five of his siblings through college my grandmother was at the time the youngest female graduate of george washington university
