You went to Virginia Tech, got a degree in engineering.
Then you went to Dartmouth for an MBA.
You started at Hubline, which was a big kind of spirits company.
They send you out to Napa and
in the 60s by the way i enjoyed reading the background because i guess one of their big brands was italian swiss colony which my dad used to pick up jugs at the px of oh yeah italian swiss colony and almond down that were on my table but that was the best at that day so yeah they were so but what was napa like back in the 60s because i started going in the late 80s and it was very agrarian even back then but you were there 20 years before that
You weren't there that long, and Hubline decided to kind of get out of the grape growing business.
And you decided to buy it from them.
How levered were you to pull that off?
And how did you, and especially how did your wife feel about the level of risk you were taking?
So not that many years after that, I think it was the mid-70s,
Grape prices dropped a lot.
I think Cabernet went from the stratospheric $800 a ton down to $400.
So you went through a very difficult time.
It was a very difficult business time.
What did you learn about yourself or what business lessons did you learn going through, if you will, a very difficult period that helped you later on?
Didn't you have to restructure your business and make some tough calls?
