And their only option was to go to the media.

And I kept making the point in the book, but I also made the point at the time when I spoke to MPs and in Parliament, I was called to give evidence about what we'd found to make the point of people don't ordinarily do this.

This was kind of a freakish investigation in the sense we couldn't deal with the sheer number of people coming forward.

And that made me question the system.

It made me think, well, this is not just a kind of strange quirk.

Why are so many people coming forward?

This is not a one-off.

We had the landlords telling us we'd found a few bad homes.

We had the National Housing Federation telling us we'd found a few bad eggs.

But all of that was in stark contrast to the kind of wave of human misery and desperation that kept coming after every report over and over again.

And that is why we started digging into the system, because there is just no way that this many people would be coming forward if we'd found a few isolated cases.

Yeah, the book, it kind of begins chronologically because that's the only way of starting this.

Because I walked into a tower block in South London as a, previously as a, at the time a political correspondent who'd been in Westminster covering COVID, frankly kind of bought out my brains, going to those kind of daily COVID press conferences where essentially we were being asked to ask the Prime Minister questions about coronavirus that the public were kind of sick of our questions and they were sick of his answers.

So everyone was losing.

And I just wanted to get out.

And so when I found this story kind of by accident, I went into those flats, having seen a few pictures that looked bad, but I thought would make up a news report.

And actually, I was meant to go to another block of flats that day to do a kind of second, what we would call case study, to make up a kind of news report.

and it was only when I walked in and saw what I saw, and I detail it in the book, but it is no exaggeration to say anyone who saw the news report and anyone who reads the book will know that that family were in danger.

They could have died in there.
