In the traditional telling of the Hundred Years' War, 1337 matters to 1340 because early in Edward III's reign, he makes the claim to be not only the King of England but the King of France.
But there's something bigger going on that you have to understand to see why Edward III makes that claim to the Crown of France, right?
And so you have to take us to the middle of the 13th century.
